How To Defeat The Bell Gargoyles In Dark Souls: Remastered

The Bell Gargoyles are a mandatory boss fight in Dark Souls: Remastered, which you must defeat to ring one of the two Bells Of Awakening. The boss encounter is located on the roof of the Undead Parish at the foot of the Bell Of Awakening’s tower. If you’re struggling with the fight, make sure to read our guide on how to defeat the Bell Gargoyles in Dark Souls: Remastered.

How To Get To The Bell Gargoyles

Starting from the bonfire above Andre Of Astora, climb the staircase and head along the bridge where three Hollows – one with a crossbow on your right – are waiting. Defeat them, and then enter the Parish.

Head through the building towards the elevators at the far side (These will take you to Firelink Shrine, so make sure to use them to unlock the shortcut). If you haven’t cleared the area out, a Knight mini-boss will be on your right, guarding a Firekeeper Soul. Defeat it and grab the Firekeeper Soul to upgrade your Estus Flask, and then push forward to the elevators but take the staircase to their right.

An ordinary Knight will be waiting at the top, so defeat him and then follow the hallway along. Ahead of you will be a Sorcerer and several Hollows, who will either charge at you or throw Firebombs. Take your time and defeat the enemies, paying particular attention to the Sorcerer and his powerful ranged attacks.

Once they’ve been defeated, take the right-hand exit into a smaller room with a ladder. Follow it up to a second floor with a second ladder. Climb that, and you’ll emerge onto a small landing with the Bell Gargoyles’ fog door.

Pass through it, and head halfway across the roof to trigger a cutscene and start the fight.

How To Defeat The Bell Gargoyles

Weaknesses:
• Lightning

Rewards:
• 10,000 Souls
• 1 Twin Humanity
• Gargoyle’s Halberd
• Gargoyle Shield (Rare)
• Gargoyle Helm (Rare)
• Gargoyle Tail Axe (Cut off tail)

When you start the fight, only one Bell Gargoyle will be present, but once you’ve reduced the Gargoyle’s health to around half, a second Gargoyle with half health will join the fight, upping the difficulty as you’ll have to avoid attacks from both bosses.

The general strategy is to deal as much damage as you can to the first Gargoyle and then select one Gargoyle and continually attack it to defeat it. Dispatching one as fast as you can rather than swapping between the two for the duration of the fight will make it easier.

The Gargoyles are very weak to lightning damage, so use Gold Pine Resin on your weapons if you have some. What’s more, cutting off the first Gargoyle’s tail by repeatedly attacking it rewards you with the Gargoyle Tail Axe, a great Strength and Dex-based weapon.

The Gargoyles aren’t a hard fight, but their attacks can hit hard if you don’t have a good shield, and their fire breath can quickly kill you. When fighting them, you’ll want to keep an eye out for:

  • Flying stab: The Gargoyles can jump and fly above you, performing a stab from above that is best blocked by your shield
  • Spear slam: The Gargoyles can slam their spear into the ground. You can avoid it by blocking the attack or rolling/moving out of the way
  • Spear swing: The Gargoyles can perform a single swing with their spear, which you can avoid by circling the boss or blocking with your shield
  • Fire breath: The Gargoyles can breathe fire ahead of and around them if you stray too far away. The fire attack can be performed on the ground or in the air and it cannot be blocked. The second Gargoyle is much more likely to breathe fire in the fight, so watch out!

While fighting, you’ll want to keep your eyes on both Gargoyles at all times, so you can easily avoid all attacks. If you find yourself ganged up, don’t be afraid to run away, but note that the Gargoyles are more likely to use their fire breath if you’re further away.

The best way to defeat the Bell Gargoyles is by sticking close to one enemy at a time and using Gold Pine Resin, making quick work of both bosses. You can also summon Solaire Of Astora and Knight Lautrec Of Carim to help you and split the bosses’ attention.

Once you’ve defeated the Bell Gargoyles, you’ll earn some Souls and some armour, and can proceed to climb the bell tower and ring the first of two Bells of Awakening. From there, you’ll want to make your way to Quelaag’s Domain.
