Sly Cooper PS4

Is There A Sly Cooper PS4 Game?

Sly Cooper is a popular PlayStation franchise with games developed by Sucker Punch Productions and Sanzaru Games. The franchise spans four main titles originally available on PS2 and a remastered collection for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita consoles. Missing, however, is Sony’s current and last-gen consoles, and we’ve been inundated with the question; is there a Sly Cooper PS4 game?

In short, no. But there are ways you can play Sly Cooper on your PS4 and PS5 console. Continue reading to find out more.

The Sly Trilogy

The original Sly Cooper trilogy was developed by Sucker Punch Productions for the PlayStation 2 and the games were praised for their fun storylines, exciting gameplay, and their hand-drawn comic-book style visuals and cel-shaded rendering.

The trilogy consists of games:

  • Sly Cooper And The Thievius Raccoonus or Sly Racoon in Europe (2002)
  • Sly 2: Band Of Thieves (2004)
  • Sly 3: Honour Among Thieves (2005)

The games follow Sly Cooper, a racoon who comes from a long line of master thieves. At a young age, his family were attacked and killed by a gang known as the Fiendish Five -led by a villain named Clockwerk – who stole his family’s Thievius Raccoonus, a book noting all of Sly’s ancestors’ special thieving moves and abilities. At an orphanage, Sly meets Bentley the turtle and Murray the hippo, and the three form the Sly Cooper gang.

In the first game Sly Racoon, Sly, Bentley, and Murray set out to find the Fiendish Five to recover the Thievius Raccoonus. Along the way, Sly is hunted by Interpol Inspector Carmelita Fox who, if you can’t tell by the name, is a fox and a potential love interest for Sly.

The second title Sly 2: Band Of Thieves follows the Sly gang as they track down members of the Klaww Gang after they steal all of Clockwerk’s mechanical parts from a Cairo museum. The group’s leader Arpeggio plans to revive Clockwerk but is eventually double-crossed by someone much more sinister, and the actions lead the Sly gang to disband.

The final game in the trilogy Sly 3: Honour Among Thieves follows Sly as he regroups his former gang and recruits new members to help him defeat the villainous Doctor M who has overtaken an island home to the Cooper Vault which is filled with Sly’s family history and decades worth of treasure.

Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time

Ten years after the original Sly Cooper game launched on the PlayStation 2, a fourth game was announced for the PlayStation 3 and Vita. Rather than being developed by Sucker Punch Productions like the original trilogy, the new was developed by Sanzaru Games, the same team behind the Sly Cooper Collection but more on that later.

Thieves In Time follows Sly and the gang as they travel through time to stop the mysterious Cyrille Le Paradox who has been re-writing time and causing the pages of the Thievius Racoonus to disappear. The game saw the Sly gang travel to various time periods and meet some of Sly’s most famous ancestors.

Although fans were excited about a new Sly title, Thieves In Time is the lowest-rated game of the series and was criticised for its long load times, strange motion controls, and for its secret ending which teased a future game although nothing ever came of it.

The Sly Collection

The Sly Collection, also known as The Sly Trilogy in Europe, is a remastered collection of the first three Sly Cooper games for the PlayStation 3. Ported by Sanzaru Games, the collection included all three main titles with improved visuals as well as a small collection of mini-games.

Can You Play Sly Cooper Trilogy On PS4?

September 2022 Update: As part of Sly’s 20th anniversary, The Sly Collection and Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time have been re-added to the Premium tier of PlayStation Plus alongside Bentley’s Hackpack.

June 2022 Update: Sony has seemingly removed The Sly Collection and Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time from the PlayStation Plus cloud service after its relaunch and merger with PlayStation Now. Since Sony has promised that more games will be added over time, it’s unclear whether the games will ever return to the service, but there have been rumours of a new Sly game in the works at PlayStation. Right now, the only way to play the Sly Cooper trilogy is via emulator.

Although there are currently no Sly Cooper PS4 games, there is a special way you can play Sly Cooper on the PS4 and it involves PS Now, PlayStation’s own cloud gaming subscription service.

PlayStation Now, normally abbreviated to PS Now, allows you to stream a collection of PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 2 games on your PlayStation 4 console or PC over the internet.

The service currently offers hundreds of new recently released games, older games, and classics including Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time and The Sly Collection. This essentially allows you to play Sly Cooper games on your PS4, as long as you have a good internet connection that is.

If you don’t, you’ll have to try digging up an old PS2 for the original trilogy or boot up an older PS3 for Thieves In Time and the remastered collection.

Will There Be A Sly PS5 Game?

Although there’s been a resurgence of platformer games over the last few years, SuckerPunch Productions issued a statement in July 2022 confirming that they have no plans for a new Sly Cooper game, and that no other developer is currently working on a new title. This means there is currently no plans for a Sly PS5 game nor are there any plans for a Sly Cooper remake, which is disappointing. It looks like the only way to play the game is via PlayStation Plus or by obtaining the original games or Trilogy on PS2 and PS3 consoles.

If you’re looking for more classics take a look at whether you can play PS2 game Tak And The Power Of Juju on PS4.

The reason for this is because Sanzaru Games, the studio behind Thieves In Time and the collection left the franchise. Meanwhile, Sucker Punch Productions have also left the franchise behind, turning their attention towards the Infamous games and recent release Ghost Of Tsushima.

Unfortunately, Sly Cooper is a PlayStation exclusive franchise which means it is not available for Xbox consoles. However, the original Crash Bandicoot trilogy was also only on PlayStation but came to Xbox with the 2017’s remastered collection, so we can’t rule it out completely.

Although the secret ending of Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time hinted at a fifth game, Sanzaru announced in 2014 that they would not be continuing with the franchise. At the time of writing, no other studio is working on the franchise so it’s unlikely that we’ll ever get a Sly 5.

In total, there have been four main Sly Cooper games for the PS2 and PS3 consoles as well as a remastered collection of the original trilogy for the PS3.

Not right now. A movie and television show have been rumoured to be in production for a long time and many fans believe that their release could lead to a Sly Cooper remake. Unfortunately, there’s been next to no news on the film or TV show, suggesting that it’s not happening anymore.

As already mentioned, the Sly Cooper franchise is exclusive to PlayStation which means it is not available with any other consoles.

Right now, there aren’t many games like Sly Cooper for the PS4. Arguably the closest is Sucker Punch Productions’ latest game Ghost Of Tsushima which features lots of stealthy gameplay as well as an explorable open-world.
