PSVR

One of the reasons so many have turned towards PlayStation over the last few years is due to the support for virtual reality. Several years on, PSVR has become a big success for Sony, but if you’re new to virtual reality, it can be somewhat confusing, particularly with all the different accessories available. If you’re looking to find what the best PSVR accessories in the UK are and where you can grab them, you’ve come to the right place!

PSVR: A Brief Overview

Sony released its PlayStation Virtual Reality (PSVR) headset in October 2016. The headset is worn and is plugged into a breakout box which is connected to your PlayStation console and your television. Movement is tracked via the PSVR headset’s lights by the PlayStation Camera, and the camera also tracks players with the light bar on the DualShock 4 or the PlayStation Move motion controllers.

When plugged in, users not wearing a headset will be able to see what the headset user is seeing or, as with some PSVR games, a separate display used to compete against the headset user.

Now, more than four years after its initial release, Sony has released dozens of full PSVR-compatible games as well as dozens of games offering shorter VR-focused experiences. There are lots to enjoy with PSVR, and it’s even compatible with the upcoming PlayStation 5!

PSVR For PlayStation 5: Does It Work?

Yep! Earlier this year, Sony confirmed that its PlayStation 5 console is compatible with PSVR. However, it’s been revealed that the current PSVR headset will only work as a backwards-compatible device, which means only PS4 versions of VR games will work and the titles will not benefit from the PS5’s improved hardware.

What’s more, the PlayStation 5’s new camera will not work with PlayStation VR. Instead, you will need to order a free adapter from Sony to connect the current VR-compatible PlayStation 4 camera to the new PS5. Anyone with a VR kit can order the camera adapter from this link, all you’ll need is to enter your VR headset’s serial number and the adapter will be provided free of charge.

Must-Have PSVR Accessories

PlayStation Camera

Regardless of whether you’re playing on PS4 or PS5, you will need to purchase the PS4 PlayStation Camera to use VR with your console. The camera is responsible for tracking movement, which means it’s pretty important.

You’ll find that most major VR bundles now come with the PlayStation Camera but if you decide to purchase the headset separately, for whatever reason, you will need to purchase the camera too. Right now, you can find the PlayStation Camera at the below stores, but be warned as there seems to be a stock shortage.

  • Amazon: £59.90
  • Argos: £44.99 (Out Of Stock)
  • Game: Out Of Stock

If you can’t find a PlayStation 4 Camera at any of the above stores, it may be worth searching for a used camera at CEX or on eBay where, if you’re lucky enough, someone might be selling off a bundle of their VR games and accessories.

PSVR Aim Controller

PlayStation VR Aim Controller is a great accessory for VR which acts as a gun in compatible VR games. The Aim Controller vibrates in your hands and provides you with complete immersion as well as precision when it comes to aiming in-game and taking down enemies. It also comes with built-in adaptive controllers, functioning like an ordinary controller too.

Right now, the Aim Controller is only compatible with a few VR games and they include Borderlands 2 VR, ChromaGun VR, Firewall: Zero Hour, Farpoint, and DOOM VR. If you’re looking for an Aim Controller, you can find it at the below retailers:

  • Amazon: £49.99
  • Argos: £54.99 (Limited Stock)

Again, if you can’t find any Aim Controllers standalone, it’s worth taking a look on eBay or at CEX. Alternatively, you can look out for some bundles with the Aim Controller included, but more details on that later.

PlayStation Move Motion Controllers

PlayStation Move Motion Controllers are special controllers which are compatible with PlayStation VR. The Move controllers use motion sensors which allows the PlayStation 4 Camera to follow all movements for VR games. The Move controllers, which are compatible with a select few non-VR games, can be used as swords, cooking spatulas, and other equipment in games, offering a deeper sense of immersion.

Since the release of PSVR, the Move Controllers have become somewhat hard to find, but they are out there. If you’re lucky, you can find some stock at the below stores:

  • Amazon: Twin Pack From £69.99
  • Argos: Twin Pack £69.99 (Limited Stock)
  • Game: Twin Pack Out Of Stock

If you can’t find individual packs of Move controllers, we’ve found that they are more widely available as part of bundles with games, such as the Marvel’s Iron Man VR bundle which comes with the Iron Man VR game and a twin pack of Move Motion controllers.

DualShock 4

Finally, one of the most important accessories for PSVR is the PS4’s DualShock 4 controller. Although most of you probably already have multiple controllers, it’s always a good idea to grab another. DualShock 4 controllers come in a variety of different colours, and they are widely available so you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding them. Some shops you can grab a DualShock 4 from include the following:

Black

  • Currys: £44.99
  • Amazon: £44.99
  • Game: £44.99
  • Game: (Pre-owned) £34.99

Midnight Blue

  • Currys: £44.99
  • Game: £44.99

Gold

  • Currys: £44.99

White

  • Currys: £44.99
  • Game: £44.99
  • Game: (Pre-owned) £34.99

Magma Red

  • Currys: £44.99
  • Game: £44.99
  • Game: (Pre-owned) £34.99

Green Camo

  • Currys: £44.99
  • Game: £44.99
